Work continues on a major sewer infrastructure upgrade at the corner of Front Street and Columbia Street in the City of New Westminster. All drivers, particularly truckers, are asked to plan ahead and seek alternative routes to avoid congestion and delays.
Metro Vancouver recommends large westbound trucks use the Tenth Avenue detour (via Braid Street and Eighth Avenue) in order to avoid the steep grade and congestion at McBride Street at Royal Avenue.
Large trucks (with three or more axles) are also asked to respect City of New Westminster regulations, which do not permit trucks on Royal Avenue from 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
Regular eastbound traffic on Columbia Street is being diverted to Royal Avenue and the westbound lane remains open. Regular vehicle traffic can also still use Front Street, with a short detour via Begbie Street.
A portion of Front Street between Columbia and Begbie streets remains closed to all vehicle traffic.
Traffic control personnel are onsite at peak hours to help with circulation and pedestrian crossing at McBride Boulevard and Royal Avenue, McBride Boulevard and E. Columbia Street, and at Front Street and Begbie Street.
Motorists should reduce speed in the area and expect delays. Please use extra caution and follow the posted signage and directions of traffic control personnel.
All downtown businesses remain open as usual.
The Front Street Sewer Upgrade Project is expected to be completed in December 2018.
