Wood waste remanufacturing with UBCWood waste remanufacturing with UBC

The wood left over from Metro Vancouver’s booming housing demolition and construction industry doesn’t have to go to waste.

Metro Vancouver, along with FP Innovations, supported research from the University of B.C., which introduced a new method to remanufacture wood waste from housing demolitions and sawmills into high-grade recycled particle board for use in furniture, cabinets and flooring.

The initiative developed by UBC, based on processes widely used in the EU, uses wood chips, off-cuts and shims from local transfer stations and saw mills. The wood is chipped down to size and mixed with a non-formaldehyde resin to produce particle board face and core layers.

This technology can benefit the B.C. lumber industry by extracting maximum value from wood waste out of the booming demolition and construction industry, or from sawmills and lumber yards. Nearly 2,500 houses are demolished in Metro Vancouver each year, sending about 400,000 tonnes of wood waste to disposal.

In 2015, Metro Vancouver implemented the Clean Wood Disposal Ban and introduced a template municipal demolition bylaw to encourage residents and businesses to recycle clean wood rather than to throw it out. According to research from the BlueGreen Alliance, wood waste remanufacturing can create nine jobs per thousand tonnes of wood, compared with only one waste disposal job for the same quantity.

http://www.gazon.co.ua/metroupdate/PublishingImages/issue29-woodwaste.jpg2017-02-27T08:00:00ZGP0|#97c53a9a-55fd-4128-87f7-a37055130c5a;L0|#097c53a9a-55fd-4128-87f7-a37055130c5a|Issue 29;GTSet|#d14ffe11-45dc-48fb-8684-ff109cf15a74

The University of B.C., with support from Metro Vancouver, has introduced a new method to remanufacture wood waste from housing demolitions and sawmills into high-grade recycled particle board.

0Inside UBC’s Centre for Advanced Wood Processing
