Fisheries initiatives at Metro Vancouver 2016 updateFisheries initiatives at Metro Vancouver 2016 update<div class="ExternalClass4C37091285F44396975DB7C1C0AD41EC"><p>While Metro Vancouver’s primary mandate is the provision of high-quality drinking water, we also work diligently and cooperatively with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO), BC Hydro, local First Nations and stewardship groups to accommodate important local fisheries initiatives within our three closed watersheds.</p><p>These initiatives are based on a number of years of collaborative planning and review as well as rigorous scientific assessment.</p><p>In 2016, the following programs, throughout the three watersheds, continued the work of enhancing the native fish stocks in the respective systems.</p><ul><li>Capilano Trap & Truck Program – Captured and transported approximately 33,500 coho and 550 steelhead smolts around the Cleveland Dam to the lower Capilano River. </li><li>Capilano Radio Telemetry Tagging – Deployed 100 tags in juvenile steelhead to assist in monitoring their movements throughout the reservoir and improve future capture rates.</li><li>Seymour River Hatchery – Contributed $125,000 (three- year agreement) for hatchery core funding.</li><li>Seymour River Rockslide – Assisted Seymour Salmonid Society and partners with rock-breaking program to re-establish Seymour canyon fish passage.</li><li>Seymour River Fish Fence – Provided tank, trailer and staff to assist with adult fish transport to the hatchery.</li><li>Coquitlam Sockeye Recovery Program - Assisted in the collection of 12,000 eggs from kokanee brood stock in the Coquitlam Reservoir that were sent to Rosewall Hatchery on Vancouver Island for incubation. </li></ul><p>Metro Vancouver continues to be a proactive participant in a variety of meaningful fisheries initiatives throughout the GVWD’s lands both above and below the dams.
