Regional Planning
  • WHAT WE DO

Our region is expected to grow by another 1 million people by 2041. Metro Vancouver works with municipalities and other partners to manage this growth in a way that ensures a livable and sustainable region.

Metro Vancouver supports land use and transportation planning that focuses growth in Urban Centres and creates vibrant and complete communities. We work to foster a strong and diverse economy, while protecting vital industrial, agricultural and conservation lands.

 We Work On

  • Putting Metro 2040 Into Action

Metro Vancouver 2040: Shaping our Future, the regional growth strategy, sets out land use policies to guide the future development of the region. Metro Vancouver provides research and policy analysis to support sound land use and transportation planning and advance regional goals. It also administers various aspects of Metro 2040, evaluating proposed amendments and regional context statements and monitoring progress.
  • Industrial Lands

Pressures from the region’s real estate market are reducing our supply of industrial lands, which are needed to support a growing and diverse economy. Metro Vancouver works to preserve existing industrial lands and use them as efficiently as possible.
  • Agriculture & The Regional Food System

Agriculture plays an essential role in our economy and local food supply. Metro Vancouver provides policy guidance to protect agricultural lands and ensure the viability of farming.
  • Conserving & Connecting Natural Areas

Our natural environment provides us with essential services, like clean air and drinking water. Metro Vancouver provides information and policy guidance to protect ecosystems and connect natural areas.
  • Livable Urban Centres

By concentrating growth, we can create vibrant areas with a range of services, housing types, jobs and amenities. Metro Vancouver works with municipalities and other partners to focus residential and employment growth in Urban Centres that are well serviced by transit.
  • Transportation & Land Use Co-ordination

Metro Vancouver plays an important role in coordinating land use and transportation planning to support the development of compact, transit-oriented communities, sustainable transportation choices, and safe and efficient goods movement. Metro Vancouver works jointly with municipalities and TransLink on initiatives to implement Metro 2040.
  • Housing Affordability & Diversity

The region faces an affordable housing shortage. The Regional Affordable Housing Strategy’s goals are to increase the supply of modest cost housing, end homelessness and meet the needs of low-income renters.
  • Electoral Area A

Metro Vancouver acts as the local government for Electoral Area A. It provides services primarily related to land use planning, building and emergency planning and response, in addition to regional services.
